The West Indian Day Parade was held this past Monday, September 4th, 2017. The march started at 11am. During the seven-hour New York carnival, steel-pan and calypso bands in elaborate costumes marched down Eastern Parkway, and vendors sold homestyle island grub along the route in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The parade started at the Brooklyn Museum. However, the pre-parade parties began before dawn with J’ouvert (daybreak in French), an irreverent festival held before the parade. Revelers often dress up as political figures or celebrities and throw powdered paint at each other, while steel drums and whistles provide the celebratory soundtrack. Each year, the parade attracts more than a million people, making it one of the, if not the largest Caribbean celebrations in the country. Thanks to heightened security measures, getting into the parade route was similar to entering Times Square on New Year’s Eve. With 12 checkpoints along the two-mile route and prohibitions of large backpacks, large bags, alcohol, and weapons. Alot is being done but it seems like the parade still isn't safe since a few participants were still injured though no participants were killed
